In1849, William Davis was the owner of 3,000 acres where McKinney now stands, and he donated 120 acres for the town site. McKinney incorporated ten years later, and the town adopted the commission form of government in 1913. For 125 years, McKinney was the principal commercial center for the county, providing farmers with flour, corn, and cotton mills, cotton gins, a cotton compress and cottonseed oil mill. It also had banks, churches, schools, newspapers, and an opera house. McKinney had a population of more than 10,000 and 355 businesses by 1953. But McKinney was surpassed in size by Plano by 1970.

McKinney is the county seat of Collin County, Texas, and second in population to Plano. In 2010 the U.S. Census Bureau recorded the city’s population at 131,117 making it the nineteenth most populous city in the state. As part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, McKinney is listed by the Census Bureau as the nation’s fastest growing city from 2000 to 2003 and then again in 2006, of cities that have more than 50,000 people. CNN’s Money magazine’s issue of 2012, ranked McKinney in 2nd place among Best Places to Live in the United States.
