First Time Coming to Grand Prairie, Texas – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Grand Prairie was once called Dechman when Alexander McRae Dechman first established the town in 1863. When the first U.S. post office was created in 1877, they used the name Deckman instead of “Dechman”, due to the fact that the United States Postal Service could not read the writing on the form used to open that post office location. That year that the Postal Service had taken the name “Deckman”, there was continuing confusion because the T&P Railroad designation there was called Grand Prairie, taken from 19th century maps. Finally, to solve the problem, the Postal Service renamed the post office Grand Prairie.
