YESTERDAY
Illinois resident Crawford Trees purchased a few thousand acres south of Camp Dallas in 1845. The Chicago, Texas and Mexican Central Railway came to the area in 1880 and built Duncan Switch. It was the first postmaster Charles P. Nance, who renamed the settlement Duncanville in 1882. Duncanville increased from 113 to more than 300 people between 1904 and 1933. The Army Air Corps created a landing field for flight training during World War II near the present-day intersection of Main and Wheatland roads. Duncanville residents incorporated the city on August 2, 1947. After the wars, the landing field was turned into the Duncanville Air Force Station, the headquarters for the four Nike-Hercules missile launch sites guarding Dallas/Fort Worth from Soviet attack.

Duncanville is in Dallas County, Texas, with a population of 38,524 in the 2010 census. Part of the Best Southwest area of Duncanville, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, and Lancaster, Duncanville is a suburb of Dallas. The city has an area of 11.3 square miles, all of it land. The Duncanville Historical Park, located on Wheatland Road in Armstrong Park on an area once a part of the Duncanville Air Force Station, preserves various pieces of the city’s history. Historic buildings include Duncanvilles first Music Room.

In 2010, racially, the population was 32.3% non-Hispanic white, 29.4% non-Hispanic black, 0.7% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.1% non-Hispanic from another race, 2.5% mixed and 35.0% Hispanic or Latino. The 2000 census recorded 36,083 people, 12,899 households, and 10,239 families living in Duncanville. Population density was 3,196.6 people per square mile, and there were 13,290 housing units at a density average of 1,177.4 per square mile. The average household size was 2.79, and 3.15 for the average family size. Household median income in the city was $51,654, and $57,064 for a family. Duncanville is educated by the Duncanville Independent School District.
