First Time Coming to DeSoto, Texas – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Desoto is one of the oldest communities in North Texas, first settled in 1847. In 1881 they established a post office and named the settlement DeSoto in honor of Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, who was a dedicated community doctor. By 1885, DeSoto had about120 people, a cotton gin, and a general store. It suffered some population decline, but after World War II, the areas around the city began to grow. The town was incorporated to improve the inadequate water distribution system, and a petition was signed in1949.
TODAY
Located in Dallas County, Texas, DeSoto had a population of 51,102 in 2010. It is a suburb of Dallas in the Best Southwest area, that includes DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Duncanville, and Lancaster. The city is a home-rule city that has a council-manager form of government, making the day-to-day management of the city under the direction of a city manager, who is appointed by the city council and is the chief administrative officer for the city. The city council is made up of the mayor and six council members, representing particular districts.

DeSoto has a total area of 21.6 square miles which is made up totally of land. The population was 51,102 in 2010, with 68.6% Black or African-American, 17.4% non-Hispanic white, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.9% Asian, 1.9% mixed, and 12.1% of the population Hispanic or Latino in origin. Population density was 1,744.5 people per square mile, with 14,069 housing units at around 652.0 per square mile. Average household income in the city was $57,699, with median family income at about $66,986.
QUALITY OF LIFE
In 2006, the city was named an All-America City by the National Civic League, where every year cities all over the country apply for the prestigious award that only 10 cities receive. The award is to recognize superior grassroots community problem-solving and DeSoto was the only city that was unanimously chosen as an All-America City. It is a progressive community with a small-town feel in the southwest corner of Dallas County. DeSoto boasts fine housing, great neighborhoods, a good school system, growing health facilities, parks and restaurants/shopping. The area is sometimes called the Hill Country of North Texas, where it is sheltered from big-city congestion
